Driving Sustainability with E-Cargo Bikes
Castle Hill Hospital, part of the NHS Humber Health Partnership, is taking a pioneering step towards greener healthcare logistics. In collaboration with East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Sustainable Transport Team, the hospital has begun trialling a carbon-saving, electric-powered quadracycle eCargo bike supplied by Cargo Cycling.

The Doer
Powering Smarter Logistics
“The Doer is a great addition to our fleet and supports our net-zero goals,” says Marc Beaumont, Head of Sustainability at the Trust. “We plan to use on-site solar power to recharge its batteries.”
With up to 2000 liters of cargo and a 200 kg payload, the Doer carries everything from medical supplies to equipment. Its removable 1400 Wh battery offers 25–50 km range and recharges in 6–8 hours, making sustainable hospital logistics simple and reliable.

Why Cargo Bikes
Over a 12-month trial, the hospital’s portering team will rely on eCargo bikes to efficiently transport linen, gas cylinders, medical equipment, and other essentials across its 168-acre site in Cottingham. By replacing a van, these bikes help cut carbon emissions, lower operational costs, and promote physical activity among staff — demonstrating why cargo bikes are a smarter, greener, and healthier solution for everyday transport.
NHS Castle Hill Hospital
Leading the Way in Sustainable Hospital Transport
Building on a long-standing collaboration between NHS Humber Health Partnership and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, this project advances cleaner, more efficient healthcare logistics. Funded by Active Travel England, it promotes active and sustainable travel across the hospital estate.
“This is an exciting next phase,” says Steve Wigley, Principal Officer at the council’s Sustainable Transport Team. “Since 2021, our partnership with the NHS has strengthened sustainable healthcare operations.”
Castle Hill Hospital has already received national recognition, including the Modeshift National Sustainable Travel Award (Team of the Year) and a 13.5% reduction in car use in one year. Andrew Bradley, Sustainable Travel Lead for NHS England, adds: “This project showcases what’s possible when healthcare, sustainability, and local collaboration come together.”
