Good to know
Frequently asked questions

What is an e-cargo bike?

An e-cargo bike is an electrically assisted bicycle designed to carry heavy loads for commercial use. Unlike consumer cargo bikes built for families, Cargo Cycling professional e-cargo bikes are engineered for intensive daily use in urban logistics, with reinforced frames, high-capacity batteries, and modular cargo compartments that can be configured for parcels, tools, food, waste, or other business-specific loads. Cargo Cycling manufactures e-cargo bikes in two-wheel, three-wheel, and four-wheel configurations with payload capacities from 110 kg to 250 kg.

How much does a e-cargo bike cost compared to a e-delivery van?

The purchase price of a professional e-cargo bike typically ranges from €4,000 to €17,000 depending on the model and configuration, compared to €30,000–€60,000 for a new electric delivery van. However, the real savings come from operating costs: no fuel, minimal maintenance, no road tax, no congestion charges, and no parking permits. Over a five-year lifecycle, cargo bikes typically deliver a 30–60% lower total cost of ownership than vans for urban last-mile routes. Cargo Cycling also offers leasing and financing options to reduce upfront investment.

Which companies use Cargo Cycling e- cargo bikes?

Cargo Cycling supplies e-cargo bike fleets to DHL, PostNL, Amazon, Lime, Subway, the NHS (UK), the Dutch Ministry of Defence, DPG Media, Panda (waste management), and numerous other logistics, delivery, and service companies across Europe. Our bikes are used for parcel delivery, mail delivery, food delivery, waste collection, battery swapping, internal site logistics, maintenance operations, and B2C deliveries.

Do riders need a driving licence to operate an e-cargo bike?

No. In the European Union, e-cargo bikes with pedal assistance up to 25 km/h and a motor rated at 250W are classified as regular bicycles under EN 15194. No driving licence, vehicle registration, or mandatory insurance is required. This makes cargo bikes accessible to a much wider pool of riders than vans, which require at least a Category B licence. Cargo Cycling does recommend (and offers) professional rider training for fleet operators to ensure safety and efficiency.

Where are Cargo Cycling bikes manufactured?

All Cargo Cycling bikes are designed, engineered, and manufactured in-house at the Nijland Cycling factory in Heeten, the Netherlands. Nijland Cycling has been building bicycles for over 35 years. The factory handles the entire production process — product development, frame welding, painting, wheel building, and final assembly — giving Cargo Cycling full control over quality and enabling rapid iteration based on real-world fleet data from customers. The only exception is the DOER. This 4-wheel e-cargo bike is developed by our partner Metrucks GmbH and partly produced in India (the chassis mainly). The DOER is assembled in our factory in Heeten.

TAB 6What maintenance do e-cargo bikes need?

E-cargo bikes require significantly less maintenance than motor vehicles. There are no engine oil changes, no exhaust systems, no clutch or gearbox components, and far fewer moving parts. The main maintenance focus lies on brake checks, tyre pressure checks, and battery health monitoring. Cargo Cycling designs its bikes with modular components and quick-access features (such as the Courier's Escape Hatch rear wheel design and the single sided wheel mounting on the DOER and the Chariot) to minimise service time and keep bikes on the road. Our network of trained service partners provides maintenance support under clear SLA agreements.

Can cargo bikes operate in all weather conditions?

Yes. Professional e-cargo bikes are designed for year-round operation. Cargo boxes and containers protect cargo from rain and wind. The four-wheeled Doer by Metrucks offers additional rider weather protection. Additional rainprotection (Veltop) is available for the Chariot as well. Cargo Cycling's bikes feature robust powder-coated frames, sealed electronics, and components rated for daily use in Northern European weather conditions. Many of our customers, including postal and parcel operators, run their fleets 365 days a year.
