Enlargement and extra jobs Nijland Cycling: bicycle manufacturer expects explosive growth in Cargo Bikes

Nijland Cycling in Heeten is looking for a larger location for the expected explosive demand for electric cargo bikes. The bicycle factory will need fifteen extra bicycle mechanics within two years.

In one of the assembly halls of Nijland Cycling in Heeten, orange frames hang from a rail. Parts of the Cargo Bikes that will be assembled from next week. “A series of cargo bikes for PostNL”, says Koen Nijland. “Last year, PostNL organized a ‘testing ground’ in Ede to find the ideal cargo bike for delivery. Ten suppliers participated, our bicycle was the winner. PostNL will now also use the cargo bike in other cities.”

“We also work for other postal and parcel services such as DHL, Cyclone Post and the rental company of electric vehicles in inner cities Dockr.” There is a lot of interest not only in the Netherlands, but also abroad are interested in the electric cargo bike from Heeten. “Germany, for example, some of our cargo bikes even ride in New York.”

Revolution

Motorized traffic is banned in more and more inner cities and polluting diesel vans are no longer welcome. Parcel deliverers must therefore look for an alternative. “We expect a revolution in the so-called last-mile delivery, or delivery on the last kilometer. Utrecht was one of the first to lock up the city center, more and more municipalities are following Utrecht’s example.”

Enlargement

Doing business is looking ahead and so Nijland Cycling is pre-sorting on what is to come. “We are looking around for a larger building where we can accommodate all branches of industry. A forklift truck still has to cross the street to pick up parts from the paint shop. There will be a new assembly line for the electric cargo bikes. The expansion will also have consequences for the paint shop. the workforce, in two years’ time we will need at least fifteen extra bicycle mechanics.”
